Getting cut whole pause to work

I am trying to cut a file into approximately 80 small files that contain single spoken words with a short silenece at the beginning and end. The words have about 5 seconds of pause between them in the source file.

Using the pause detection facility, if I don't tick the "Cut Whole Pause" the code finds the end of the silences well and insets a full cut line. This however leaves a chunk of silence after the spoken word.

If I tick the "Cut Whole Pause" button, I get the same effect (it does not de-select the silent sections) and it does not "dot" some of the cut points .. resulting in fewer actual output files.

Any advice on how I can clip out the individual spoken words with minimal silence on either side (without manually picking each word would be much appreciated.
