OK, here's my report after testing v165 Alpha:
(PDA = Picture Display Area)
1) The image stretchs it's height to fill that of the PDA; IMHO, the image should always keep it's original aspect ratio.
2) When adjusting the height of the PDA (left button click/drag/release), the folders disappear until the button is released.
3) When adjusting the height of the PDA, if you drag the line all the way to the bottom and then back up, the image gets "broken and multiplied" (sorry, my limited English doesn't allow me to put it more properly). Again, that's until the button is released.
4) I'm gonna need an example for this one: if the original image is, lets say, 200 x 200 px, and you try to set your PDA to 200 (height) x 150 (width), the image will "float" over the PDA's right border (with a similar effect to what I described in item nº 3 above), instead of rescaling to 150x150. Reloading the file list clears that graphic glitch.
5) The background color of the PDA should match the background color of 1by1.
I recorded a little video to illustrate items 2, 3 and 4, in that order (whenever you see a red circle around the cursor arrow it means either that I'm dragging the left mouse button or that I just clicked it):

Like audio said, I also hate pointing out flaws, but, well, this is an alpha, that's what we're suposed to do .
Best regards,
Gabriel. |

Fist of all, I loved the new features! It really moves 1by1 Player towards perfection!
Here's what I found so far:
- The image display is amazing! It really helps recognize the album being listened to and is a great adition to the program.
- The volume control by the mouse wheel option is really great too (and works perfectly).

-- BUGS --
There were NO MAJOR BUGS found in the software, only minor ones.
Image Reference: http://i37.tinypic.com/avlkzd.png
[bg001] The aspect-ratio of the images displayed are not kept right when the height of the image window is generally bigger than the width (inverse rectangle like).
[bg001-Description] When you adjust either the image or the tree window to a point where the height is big enough, the aspect-ratio of the cover image gets distorted, probably because the height of the image is used for proportion, and when the width of the same window is not big enough, it will get the aspect-ratio distorted.
[bg001-Proposition] Instead maybe the program should switch the resizing constraints to the width (instead of the heigh) in these cases where the width is not big enough. Or maybe check both (width and height) window constraints all the time, and adjust to the smallest.
[bg002] When reducing the tree window width, the image will "bleed" to the tracks window when the proper image width is bigger than what's being used.
[bg002-Description] When you reduce the tree/image window width and the current width of the image is bigger than the the width of the new window, the image will "bleed" some vertical lines to the tracks window and keep these image lines (related to the cover being displayed) even if the tree window width is increased back to its original width.
[bg002-Proposition] This problem might be related and/or solved relating to bg001.
___________________________________________________
-- ISSUES --
Minor issues to be noticed.
[is001] The background color of the image window doesn't keep the preferences set for the other windows.
[is001-Comment] Shouldn't the background color for the image window keep in unity with the tree window and the tracks window?
Image Reference: http://i33.tinypic.com/2iuzsyp.jpg
[is002] It seams that the calculation time for the track's times in this version is slightly bigger than the previous version (1.64).
[is002-Comment] For folders (albums) with few tracks the change is barely noticed (it's just a second longer or even a fraction of it), but for folders with too many tracks it seams to be quite some seconds more.
[is003] There is no option for "Always scan for times" in the Control TAB.
[is003-Comment] Shouldn't the option "Always scan for times" be on the Settings/Control/Control Options TAB also? (instead of being "only" in the context menu and keyboard shortcut) |

Thanks for your detailed reports.
Yes, the correctly fitting image will only be reloaded on releasing the mouse button. I think the ugly scenes while rezising are not a problem, as they don't occur on normal usage.
Using the background color of the lists is not as easy. Because a second element "behind" the picture would be needed, and I don't know if this is "allowed". Other solutions would be too complex.
The aspect ratio problem has been corrected here:

I Also had a close look at the first alfa version
My remarks/sugestions:
1. jpg is shown when active mp3 or cuesheet is selected, but not when the active m3u file is selected.
I suppose this isn't implemented yet?
2. I think the playlist view should be in the lower right corner, not in the upper right corner. It feels weird having the dirtree on the upper left corner and the content view of the dir in the lower right place. (crossed)
IMO the dirtree and content window should be next to each other.
3. A "toggle jpeg" icon next to the "toggle playlist view" icon. (on the left side, because the jpeg is on the left side, playlist is on the right side) |

| Zitat: | | Yes, the correctly fitting image will only be reloaded on releasing the mouse button. | I agree that's expected behaviour from the software really. Nothing wrong here at all (as you state).
| Zitat: | | I think the ugly scenes while rezising are not a problem, as they don't occur on normal usage. | Indeed, there is no real problem with that too. I just mentioned it on [bg002] because the bleeding would stay after the resizing and not disappear. Still, nothing that reloading the directory wouldn't correct.
By the way, I am glad to inform you that this new Alpha you just posted (with corrected aspect ratio) also eliminated that problem on [bg002] (there is NO MORE bleeding AFTER a risizing takes place).
| Zitat: | | Using the background color of the lists is not as easy. Because a second element "behind" the picture would be needed, and I don't know if this is "allowed". Other solutions would be too complex. | I agree. That's a tiny issue really (and not a problem at all). The toolbar color on the background of the image window does NOT disrupt the unity of the program interface (I was completely wrong about that).
Now that the aspect ratio is perfect, I can have my image window adjusted to be more square-like and as a result very few image covers have significant space for the background color. The appearance of the interface is really great now! (there's no room for complaints in that area anymore )
It really looks great! ->
http://i36.tinypic.com/2rhv886.png
Before I go, I should really point out that the ability to resize the image cover window sets 1by1 appart from the other players - even more -, because on the other players I have to settle for whatever size the developer thinks is ideal.
Here with 1by1 we just can have the cover as LITTLE or as BIG as we WISH.
That's PRICELESS! Congratulations! You just made the world's GREATEST (and perfect) player!

I alredy did suggest that button a while ago (I even drew it - http://i33.tinypic.com/zlymfl.png), but Martin said it wouldn't be implemented. Probably he does not want to clutter the toolbar anymore. I understand his point of view.
| Martin hat folgendes geschrieben: | | An extra button for switching the image feature on and off won't be implemented. There is one checkbox in the settings and an item in the options menu. And of course, the feature can be toggled by shortcut (Ctrl+Shift+P). |
He got me thinking about it, and here's what I figured out:
- As many of us will be EITHER using the cover feature A LOT or NOT AT ALL, this button wouldn't get too much use in reality (I will probably leave it ON all the time). I mean, there isn't much logic in keeping toggling the image on and off, you probably want to see it or you don't. That does not mean that SOME people couldn't do that, just that MOST people probably wouldn't.
- It's not that hard to memorize that Ctrl-Shift-P would do the same trick as the button would. So, for any of us who wishes to keep toggling the image, that's the real option (go to the keyboard).
But who knows? Maybe in the future we can even customize our toolbars...
(choose what commands to display and what not to display, because customizing the images is already here as an option)
(And that is just because soon enough, Martin will run out of options to improve 1by1, as it is already close to perfection. )
Yours,
audio. |

Ok something that popped up in my head moments ago (I know development is progressed a lot, but just consider this):
Instead of reserving value desktopspace for the flyer why not showing .jpg files in the directorytree?
When you click on a .jpg in thedirtree you can see the .jpg in the right window where normally the .mp3 files are shown. (the .mp3 window is hidden since the .jpg is visible when a jpeg is clicked in the dirtree)
It's not that you watch cover art all the time, so displaying it all the time is a "waste" of desktop space.
Advantage:
1. You keep the original space for the dirtree (important for small computerscreens)
2. the dirtree can handle multiple .jpg's and their name is irrelevant. Directory handling is the basic idea of this player, so we should stick to this idea.
3. You don't need to activate the mp3 to see the corresponding coverart. You can play an mp3 of another album when viewing .jpg from another dir/album.
4. Covers can be much bigger when since you use the same desktopspace twice (for coverart and .mp3/.cue display)
5. The discussion about the "toggle picture view" icon in the menu bar is irrelevant. |

Nice idea, indeed.
But for the next release there won't be any more changes in the picture feature. To view all files of a folder you should try "Open picture" in the main menu (right click e.g. on the pic). This should open the current viewer which allows browsing the images and shows them in full size. Doesn't this work? May be this Menu item should be documented...

Yup, it does work in the alfa.
For now, no need to completely change the picture feature (development is advanced to far)
Its just that it doesn't really work easy on my small laptop window (14 inch, I turned the pic feature off)
That's why I was searching for a more streamlined solution.
I believe the solution I described fits more the basic idea of the program (working with dirs).
I don't know what language 1by1 is programmed in, but some languages (VB6, Java,..) have the ability to place multiple frames on top of each other (fileview on top of pic view,...) You can set them invisible/visible in the gui depending on the action by the user
I'm just giving comments, suggestions, userexperiences so that the program becomes better and better over time |

Hi, Johan,
I will reply some of your statements above just because I wish to keep the discussion about the Cover Art alive. I think that it's quite healthy that everyone gets to comment about it and show his point of view.
Please don't take this personally, as I kind of slightly disagree on some of the things you said. Our only goal here is that we're both trying to improve 1by1 (we think it's so great that we picked it to be our player of choice).
| NastyBeats hat folgendes geschrieben: | | ...Instead of reserving value desktopspace for the flyer why not showing .jpg files in the directorytree? | Hmm... Personally, I think that opening a directory and seeing more than just the filelists (*.m3u) and the cue lists (*.cue) would get confusing.
You see, I don't know about everybody else, but I do have many albums (directories) that I have scanned the whole booklet and each page is represented by a single .jpg file. (So, for me, that would represent a serious no-no. But if I could turn OFF that displaying of .jpg in the dirtree, that would be OK).
| Zitat: | | ...When you click on a .jpg in thedirtree...right window where normally the .mp3 files are shown...the .mp3 window is hidden... | The same way you comment "Directory handling is the basic idea of this player", I could comment "MUSIC playing is the basic idea of this player" and I wouldn't be too far off.
I think that hiding the .mp3 files at any time wouldn't be a good behaviour.
Having both windows on the right, no problem. But hiding the audio file list in favour of a big whole cover art isn't the best idea in my opinion. I think the cover art in the player idea is "an aid", something to help you recognize the album, just like most of the players do. It should be unobtrusive and out of the way of the player functions.
What I'm trying to say is: The MAIN goal is to play MUSIC, displaying the COVER is great, but nonetheless a secondary function.
| Zitat: | | ...not that you watch cover art all the time, so displaying it all the time is a "waste"... |
I respect you opinion here, I and really see a user that would love to toggle on and off your covers all the time (ctrl+shift+P).
Honestly, when you think about most of the users that would bother to turn the cover feature on, I really think that they want to do 2 things:
[1] See the cover from the album currently playing (i.e. switching to the player window, when you're working or doing something else, and saying "Ah, so this is what's playing, I remember that album..." or something like that).
[2] Browse the directories for an album and have a visual aid in recognizing the next album you want to play.
And as of NOW, we have BOTH of that.
So, is it a "waste" of space showing the cover all the time? In my opinion, HELL NO!!!
(does it take valuable space from the directory tree? yes, but it's ABSOLUTELLY worth it)
| Zitat: | | 1. You keep the original space for the dirtree (important for small computerscreens) |
I could argue with that...
Is it important (especially for small screens) to keep the dirtree space? Sure.
Is it TOO IMPORTANT? I don't think so. If it is, the best idea is to keep toggling the image (crtl+shift+P).
I have a small screen here (15'' or, actually 14.6'') and the cover feature works really fine. The dirtree gets smaller, but you can ALWAYS ADJUST the HEIGHT of the cover window.
I think it works great even for small screens. If you just want to see your whole cover art as BIG as possible (if you have a small screen, the player alone will never give you a big enough window), just hit the context menu on the picture or on the toolbar and type P (or choose "Open picture").
| Zitat: | | 2. the dirtree can handle multiple .jpg's and their name is irrelevant. |
You got me on this one...
The fact that the name is irrelevant is a good point, but that does not mean that we couldn't have a solution for that in the future, without loosing the functionality as it is.
| Zitat: | | Directory handling is the basic idea of this player, so we should stick to this idea. |
Yes... Yes, it is.
But as I said above, audio playing is also the basic idea of this player...
Seriously though, what I mean is that the whole image handling issue should not take precedence over the audio files handling.
| Zitat: | | 3. You don't need to activate the mp3 to see the corresponding coverart. |
Hmmm... I think that having a separate cover for each mp3 file is the exception rather than the rule. The general rule the I think most average people follow is to have a directory handling an album. That said, I believe that 1by1 is behaving exceptionally well for the average user and in future versions it will handle those other situations really well, just give Martin enough time.
| Zitat: | | You can play an mp3 of another album when viewing .jpg from another dir/album. | I'm sorry if I don't understand exactly what you mean. As of now, I can already both PLAY an audio file and BROWSE the directories for another album, while seeing the covers for all those diferent albums to help me recognize them. (How great is that?! )
| Zitat: | | 4. Covers can be much bigger when since you use the same desktopspace twice (for coverart and .mp3/.cue display) | Hmmm... So that's what you're actually aiming for? bigger covers?
If it is, I'm sorry to say that I'm less than enthusiastic about it, to say the least. But I respect your need.
My point of view is: the cover displaying is an aid that the player kindly offers us. If we want to see more, we have to open the appropriate program for that using the shortcut that the player also offers us (menu context on the image, P).
| Zitat: | | 5. The discussion about the "toggle picture view" icon in the menu bar is irrelevant. | I don't think so, if any other user, just like you and me, would like to have that functionality in the toolbar, maybe it shows a trend. Maybe Martin can implement this in the future, maybe not, but still it's nice to hear that somebody else wants it. |

How about if you create a directory for each of the tracks that you want to see the cover without playing the file?
This way you could easily browse the other tracks without interrypting the one that's playing while still mantaining the same functionality (file2 will play right after file1 and so forth...).
If you have a directory like this:
<DANCE>
......|-<POP>
............|-file1.mp3

............|-file3.mp3
It could be like this:
<DANCE>

ok guys I took notes of your remarks.
Let me make it a bit easier:
- Show .jpg files in the dirtree (left window).
When doubleclicking a . jpg, show the picture in a
seperate window, centered on the screen (similar
like the bigscreen feature)
-> The position should be fixed, doubleclicking
the picture closes the popupwindow/picture
this way, the dirtreeview and the playlist view keep the same width & height, and thats what I prefer on my small laptopscreen.
This way the playlist remains visible - required by Martin in previous post.
It would be optimal if picturebehaviour could be selected in the options screen (either in a popup window or in a frame as it is now)
Showing .jpg files in the dirtree gives more freedom (number of jpg's and name) and it is usable for both ways (popupwindow/frame) of displaying the picture.
Once again these are sugestions !! |
